Periwinkle and Raspberry Bridal Shower!

March 15, 2011 By Jackie Fo 6 Comments

Hello all! Apologies for a lack of posting last week, things have been busy here in my world! I am still tweaking my new website/blog and will be debuting it as soon as possible. I’m pumped!
I am also pumped about how my bridal shower turned out this past weekend. The weather in Charlotte was absolutely gorgeous and was perfect for celebrating a happy bride to be.
So…periwinkle and raspberry are the bride’s wedding colors, which is what I did for the shower colors. Here are the official Pantone colors for periwinkle and raspberry:
So, we are really talking about a light blue color and a fuchsia color…you will see many variations of these colors in my pictures, so bear with me. The exact colors are reallly hard to find!
Let’s take a look, shall we?
The main design element to the shower was based off the invitation. I wanted a simple monogram invitation, and Stacey from Etsy really delivered. Check out her shop HERE! Stacey was really great to work with, and even made me custom stickers and allowed me to use the monogram image throughout the shower! Thanks Stacey!!
Here’s the invite:
So now you have the inspiration …
I went a little crazy with tissue paper flowers, but this time, I made them into pom balls. For the front door, I created hanging pom balls to welcome the guests:

I also used the pom balls as centerpieces for the tables:
These are all made from Styrofoam balls. Make your individual flowers and use the floral wire to place each flower into the Styrofoam until the surface is covered. I used one big ball per table and elevated it using a pedestal vase. The other balls are styro balls that are simply cut in half so the bottom is flat and lays flush on the table. This is key because you can get different heights and you also don’t need to make as many flowers!

I loved how they turned out! The mother of the bride liked them so much she took them home with her to use at the rehearsal dinner this summer! I was so glad because they do take quite a bit of time, and I probably would have tossed them due to utter lack of storage space.
Thanks to Stacey, who sent me the pdf image of the circle monogram, I was able to use it in several aspects of the party. Below, as chair decor:

And as mantel decor:
I also used the stickers Stacey created on candles, cups and on the muffin/cupcake wrappers. I ordered these white scalloped cupcake wrappers from the new Etsy shop: CupcakeExpress. Ashley was excellent to work with and her cupcake wrappers are so adorable!
The shower was at 12 p.m., so it was perfect for brunch food. I did a breakfast bar with a combo waffle bar, yogurt parfait bar and muffins, coffee cake and fruit. I created a blue ribbon backdrop and decorated it with pom flowers. The K and the D were cardboard letters that I spray painted and hung from the wall. Note: I was so pumped to find the spray paint color – it was called Raspberry! Needless to say, it looks quite different than the Pantone raspberry. All of these companies need to be coordinating with each other so we can get consistent colors ha!
I was really happy how the backdrop for the food table turned out.

To wash it all down, I created a mimosa bar. This was inspired by one of my favorite blogs, Eat Drink Pretty, who created a champagne bar for her sister’s bridal shower.

I made K cookies for favors, I think they turned out well! I am improving my royal icing skills, and have found the perfect sugar cookie recipe: Dorie Greenspan’s All Occasion Sugar Cookie

I love these napkins that I found at Old Time Pottery for 99 cents each!

Of course, I did a signature Jackie Fo bathroom flower.

And finally, for a little comic relief – I created trivia based on the couple. The winner gets a prize, and you get to see how many people really know the couple!

Hope you enjoyed the pictures! Have a great week and I will be back with more posts this week!

Valentine’s Day Table – Dollar Store style!

February 8, 2011 By Jackie Fo 5 Comments

Here’s the thing about me, among other things: I’m a thrifty gal. I shop at Marshall’s, have been known to use coupons and HATE paying full price. I am of the mindset that it is totally possible to have a fabulous wardrobe, a cute house and throw a fantastic party on a budget. In fact, I think of it as a challenge …when I find a good deal, I get giddy!
So last time I was at the Dollar Store scoring some sweet party goods for my latest bash, I noticed the Valentine’s Day section. In a flash of pure genius, I decided to do a Valentine’s Day table using only items from the Dollar Store. It was the Dollar Tree to be exact. Oh, and did I mention it cost me only $25? So if you are tight on money this Valentine’s Day, hit up your local Dollar Tree to create a beautiful table for your sweetheart.
(Thanks to my friend Michael Flanagan for taking all the pictures.)
Here’s the thing….I bought items without knowing exactly what I was going to use them for. Sometimes you just have to play around with them when you get home and lay everything out.
First stop at the Dollar Store? Crepe paper streamers. They are not just for a backyard birthday party anymore – my party blog peeps have been using these for all types of gorgeous backdrops and tablescapes. I decided to use a basket weave pattern for my table using pink and red streamers instead of a tablecloth. Cost for streamers? $2. It looks very festive and fun!
My next purchase? Doilies. The Dollar Tree had quite an assortment of Valentine’s Day doilies…pink, red, white, heart shaped, circles, every doily you can imagine. A plethora of doilies, if you will. I used them all over my tablescape.
I layered up doilies for my place settings.
I used the pink hearts as  “coasters” for my wine glasses.
I wrapped mason jars in the white doily and put a candle votive inside. The candlelight showed through the white and created a pretty glow.
I also used doilies folded in half to create a garland for the backdrop. I love this look! I saw variations of doily garland on several different blogs and decided to give it a try. Just google “Doily garland” and you will see tons of of ideas!

I managed to do a little crafting, but nothing strenuous. I made a tissue paper flower for the center and covered the vase with pink streamers.
I cut out hearts from a heart adorned gift bag to hang from streamers on the back of the chairs.
Other decor aspects…
I found these adorable boxes at the Dollar Store and set them on each place setting – how cute are these?
What’s inside of these cute boxes? Home made Valentine cookies made by moi, of course.
(Note, the below picture is mine, not Flanagan’s…if you couldn’t tell by its average quality πŸ™‚ )
A few more detail shots:

And finally, a few full length views of the table:
Full disclosure – The candlesticks were a wedding gift and I highly doubt they cost a dollar as they came in a Tiffany’s box (which I saved btw…the box is so beautiful I couldn’t part with it). The wine glasses, napkins, mason jars and plates were also things I already had. Everything else was a Dollar Store gem.
Lesson for all you hates out there- don’t knock the Dollar Store. It may not have the fancy floors or a Starbucks inside, but there are some good deals to be found if you use your creativity. I plan on keeping this up for my Valentine’s Day dinner with Mr. Fo….guess I should figure out what I am cooking!

Anthropologie styled bridal luncheon

January 21, 2011 By Jackie Fo 13 Comments

This Anthropologie-like bridal shower I styled last week was so much fun! There is tons of great inspiration out there for vintage flowers and decor. I was really pleased with how it turned out!
In order to designate who the Bride was (as if anyone would NOT know!) I found these gorgeous, pre-made pennant letters from the Ruffled blog. Seriously, bookmark this link for your next party, it’s so easy! Print out the pre-made bunting letter to spell the word you want, and cut it out!

Next up flowers, real and faux! Faux as in tissue paper, not silk…don’t worry πŸ™‚ Real flowers first:
I wanted do an eclectic mix of vases and flowers, so here was my collection:
 Colored glasses – World Market
Green birdies – Old Time Pottery
Blue Glass pedestals – Old Time Pottery
Mini Off White Urns – Old Time Pottery
Clear glass with dots – Ikea
(I have to tell you, my vase collection is out of control. I need a storage unit for my glassware….for serious.)
For flowers, I used a mix of pink/white carnations, white “football mums,” yellow Billy Balls and gorgeous pink peonies.  I clustered arrangements in the center of the tables for a pretty centerpiece!

For the “faux” flowers, I went mini-pom crazy! Poms are tissue paper flowers first made famous by Martha Stewart … I think, at least that’s where I first saw it! I put a different colored pom on each place setting:

I created garland with a vintage vibe by using string and scrapbook paper. One of the best buys for a DIY event is a book of pretty scrapbook paper. It’s $14 bucks or so, and you get so much use out of it! My friend Hillary came over one day and we drank one and created garland. It was a good time – thanks Hill!
I did 6 different strands. 3 between 2 columns in the entrance to the dining room, and three on the mirror on the back of the wall. I was definitely up on a ladder to get those suckers to stay on, and it turns out – I’m afraid of being on a ladder! Who knew. Another thing I learned? Very hard to take pictures of garland!

Let’s take a view of the whole table now…there were actually 2 tables, so here they are!
A champagne toast to the bride. Again, I used scrapbook paper to make pretty tags for the flutes!
I loved the favors! They were small white boxes that had each guest’s name on them and doubled as place cards. Inside the boxes? Chocolates, but personalized to the couple! An I heart NYC chocolate to pay homage to the couple’s home, a ladybug chocolate because ladybugs are a childhood nickname of the Bride, and chocolate kisses with crowns and Queen City stickers on them. (Charlotte (the bride’s hometown) is known as the Queen City.)
There’s that scrapbook paper again – that’s 3 uses in one party if you’re counting πŸ™‚
A close up of the personalized chocolates:

And finally, the all important topic of food. For a bridal luncheon, it needs to be light and girly … to put it plainly. I used Dean and Deluca catering, who always does a beautiful job. On the menu?
Chicken Cobb Salad (set up as a station so people could make their own)
Currant Tomato and Gruyere Cheese Tartlets (amazing)
Green Goddess Sushi Roll (Basically fresh veggie sushi)
Can you get more girly than that – the word tartlet just screams girly!
Now I am off to catch up on all my favorite blogs… I haven’t had time to look at any this week! I’ll be in cyberspace visiting my “friends” if you need me πŸ™‚

Ringin’ in the New Year …

January 3, 2011 By Jackie Fo 7 Comments

First and foremost – HAPPPPPPPY NEW YEAR! I finally took down my Christmas tree this weekend, which officially signals the end of the holiday season for me. It’s painful taking down the tree. I may have shed a tear or two. On the plus side, it’s always fun to watch Mr. Fo take the tree outside to the trash. Basically I laugh while he curses as he gets sap and pine needles all over himself and says this is the “last year we will get a real tree.” Oh Mr. Fo… as if you have any say in that decision. I run Christmas in this house…WORD!
To ring in the New Year, we had a little soiree at our place before going out to dinner with friends. I think it’s safe to say that we are past the point of crazy New Year Eves (NERD ALERT), but I still like to celebrate with some friends, food and bubbly. After a quick trip to Party City and the Dollar Tree, I had a nice little gold, silver and black New Years Eve theme. Take a look at the pictures of the party taken by my friend Flanagan. Thanks Flan!
This NYE 2010 might as well have been brought to you by: Ballatore Spumante Rose.
It’s my new favorite beverage. Why?
1) It’s $8 for a bottle. EIGHT! OCHO! (That’s all the languages I know)
2) It’s a beautiful dark pink color.
3) Champagne is supposedly the lowest caloric alcoholic beverage…meaning you can eat more cheese and  cupcakes at parties.

I had champagne flutes for all of the guests sitting in a tray of silver tinsel. Each flute had a name tag tied with a gold ribbon. I think it turned out very cute and festive! Note the hodgepodge of flute styles…Drives me crazy! We got a set of beautiful matching champagne flutes for our wedding, but we returned them because we had ZERO room to store them! I would have stored them in the bathtub if I knew how many times I would have used the matching flutes. Oh well πŸ™‚
I made a few light appetizers to tide us over until our New Years Eve dinner. On the menu?
Cranberry-BBQ Meatballs – BBQ Sauce, Cranberry sauce and thawed meatballs done in the slow cooker!

Shrimp – marinated with minced garlic and lemon – YUMM
Caprese Salad – drizzled with olive oil, balsamic and lemon…use GOOD FRESH MOZZARELLA in water – it makes a difference! Serve with toasted crostini.
Also served were mac and cheese bites, found on my blog HERE, and celery/carrot/ranch “shooters.” I chose these appetizers because they were all super easy and most involved assembly only, versus cookies. The apps I did have to cook I was able to prepare before. This is a great menu for a light spread that won’t leave you in the kitchen all night!
I did create the Martha Stewart clock countdown cupcakes, as I mentioned HERE! It was pretty easy to do! I made pink champagne cupcakes with a white chocolate glaze. They were DELICIOUS. Mr. Fo wrote the numbers on the cupcake with black icing…he’s good at that kind of stuff πŸ™‚ Check it out!
Here are some additional pictures of the set-up:
In this picture you can see how the food was served on raised gold chargers. Underneath the chargers were glass containers filled with the silver foil shred/tinsel. I got bags of it at the Dollar store, and it was worth every penny!

Cheers to 2011! Guess it’s back to the real world tomorrow πŸ™‚
